Cardiac Diagnostics
We offer the following diagnostic methods to discover the source of your problem and symptoms:
A treadmill stress test evaluates how the heart works during exercise. This test may reveal your heart problems, as the heart pumps faster during physical activity, when not at rest. If you cannot exercise, special medications (pharmacologic agents) may be used instead of the treadmill.
A nuclear stress test will help your physician see if you have coronary artery disease (CAD), which is caused by inadequate blood supply to the heart, usually caused by blocked arteries. A special camera shows areas of healthy and unhealthy heart muscle. Pictures will be taken during this test for the doctor to evaluate and provide treatment if necessary.
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart where sound waves create a “live” picture of the heart beating. Your doctor will be able to view the valves and chambers of your heart to check for heart disease, heart murmurs, and evaluate the functioning of your heart valves chambers.
This records the electrical activity of the heart and can reveal if there may be evidence of heart attacks or insufficient blood supply to the heart.
A Holter monitor records your heart's electrical activity the entire time you're wearing it. An event monitor records your heart's electrical activity only at certain times while you're wearing it. These portable devices record the level of your heart’s activity while you go about your day.
ABI is performed by taking blood pressure measurements at the ankle and the arm while a person is at rest.
A coronary computed tomography angiogram (CTA) uses advanced CT technology, along with intravenous (IV) with contrast dye, to obtain three-dimensional pictures of the moving heart and great vessels.
We offer a Coumadin Clinic for patients receiving anticoagulation therapy. The goal of the clinic is to educate patients about the use of this type of therapy and to monitor patients for side effects and evaluate their risk of bleeding.
Cardioversion can correct a heartbeat that's too fast (tachycardia) or irregular (fibrillation). Cardioversion is usually used to treat people who have atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter, which are conditions where the electrical signals that cause your heart to beat in a regular rate and rhythm don't properly travel through the upper chambers of your heart.
Patients using pacemakers usually receive a pacemaker interrogation during follow-up appointments after the initial pacemaker implantation. The doctor will retrieve information about cardiac events from the memory of the device, confirm that the batteries are still in good condition, and make sure everything is working properly.
The key to preventing coronary artery disease (CAD), is managing your risk factors. But, how do you know which risk factors you have? The best way to find out is through screening tests because it helps detect them in their earliest stage. For many patients, screening tests serve as a wake-up call.
Most regular cardiovascular screening tests should begin at age 20. The frequency of follow-ups will depend on your level of risk.
Your cardiac work up with Dr. Awaida will involve a health background interview, a physical exam and cardiac tests, including an electrocardiogram.
Patients may also undergo a stress test that allows the doctor to assess their coronary arteries or whether they develop rhythm problems while exercising. The echocardiogram will give information about the size and shape of the heart and how well the chambers and valves are working.
Dr. Awaida may prescribe a 24-hour Holter monitor that you wear in the comfort of your home or at work, to evaluate your heart rate and rhythm over a 24-hour period '"APPOINTMENT REQUEST".

Vascular Procedures
We provide the following in-office vascular procedures:
Minimally invasive procedure to treat varicose veins. Varithena is a gentle microfoam treatment delivered in 1-2 needle sticks. Only 4% of patients reported pain at the injection or application site in clinical trials. For most people, Varithena improves both physical symptoms related to varicose veins, and their appearance.Varithena doesn’t involve surgical vein stripping, eliminating the associated risks. This procedure doesn’t require general anesthesia, sedation and incisions. “
Examines the abdominal aorta for possible aneurysm or dilation of the artery.

Performed to evaluate the arteries of the legs for peripheral vascular disease. This is sometimes the cause for claudication and leg pain.
Treatments usually include lifestyle changes (diet and exercise), medicines, and ongoing care. If you have severe heart failure, you also may need medical procedures or surgery.
An arrhythmia is an abnormal heart rhythm, or irregular heartbeat. It can be treated in many cases with a technique called a catheter ablation. During a catheter ablation, a high-frequency electrical energy is delivered through a catheter (a small, thin tube) through a vein in the leg, and makes its way into the small area inside the heart that causes the abnormal heart rhythm, with the goal of removing what is causing the arrhythmia.
When catheter ablation fails or when the patient also has a congenital heart condition (he or she is born with it), it may be necessary to perform surgery to remove the arrhythmia. In the case of congenital heart disease, surgical ablation can be done at the same time as surgery to correct the heart defect.
Medication Management
Many patients take a combination of prescribed and over-the-counter medications as well as natural and vitamin supplements. The medication regimen can become confusing especially for the elderly, patients recently discharged from the hospital and/or those who have multiple chronic conditions (such as diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipemia and congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction).
